Sacramento Labor Council, Flip the 14, and California Away Team Announce Merger of Field Operations in CA-04 to Defeat Congressman Tom McClintock
ROSEVILLE, CA — To maximize the impact of their field plans and avoid duplicating efforts as they work to defeat Congressman Tom McClintock, the California Away Team, Flip the 14, and Sacramento Labor Council today announced that they are merging their field operations in California’s 4th Congressional District.
Their joint field outreach is focused on reaching newly registered voters, voters registered for the first time in 2016, and voters who have consistently missed mid-term elections.
The Sacramento Labor Council and Flip the 14 announced their joint partnership in March. The Cal Away Team has been conducting canvasses in CA-04 since late 2017, and they have already identified 7,000 priority voters who have pledged to vote in the November 2018 election. Flip the 14’s field analysis of CA-04 estimates the need to turn out or convert 68,400 total new voters to defeat Congressman McClintock.
An Open Letter to California Democrats Running for Congress in Races with Multiple Serious Republican Candidates
At Code Blue and Flip the 14, two Resistance organizations committed to helping Democrats take back Congress, we know it takes a strong and determined spirit to run for Congress. Campaigning isn’t for the faint of heart, and the drive to serve is enviable.
Candidates put in long hours meeting voters, running a campaign, and raising the resources necessary to compete. It's hard work, and we salute everyone who puts their hat in the ring.
Our organizations, active in all 14 congressional districts currently represented by a Republican in Congress, are explicitly candidate neutral. We have not used our organizations, our resources, or our network of allies in the Resistance to tip the scales in anyone’s direction. Our focus is uniting behind every Democrat that advances to the general election and doing what we can to help them become victorious in November.
However, in multiple districts, we are concerned that a Democrat won’t even advance to the general election because of California’s top two primary.
Did you hear the news out of Pennsylvania? Conor Lamb’s incredible victory in the PA-18 special election proves what we’ve been saying this entire time: we can win in all 14 of California’s Republican-held congressional districts.
PA-18 is a district that Trump won by 20 points. It’s now sending a Democrat to Congress. That’s unbelievable!
But why does that matter in California? 13 of California’s 14 congressional districts represented by a Republican are at least as competitive as PA-18. Take a look:
Doug Linney, the Co-Founder and Campaign Manager of Flip the 14, an organization focused on helping Democrats compete in all 14 Congressional Districts currently represented by a Republican, issued the following statement after the stunning upset in Pennsylvania’s 18th Congressional District special election:
“Flip the 14’s strategy couldn’t be any clearer or more urgent. We need to compete everywhere!
As the gun debate swirls across our nation after yet another mass shooting at a school, we all grieve for the families and friends who are burying loved ones this week.
The epidemic of gun violence is a sickness that infects America. It should inspire our lawmakers to stand up and save our children, but the blood money Republicans in Congress receive from the NRA seems to always stand in the way of reform.
California’s Republicans in Congress are an abject failure in keeping us safe. In 2016, all 14 received an A or A+ rating from the NRA. Doing the NRA’s bidding, the only gun law they’ve passed actually rolls back gun safety.
That’s why Flip the 14 will be participating in the March for Our Lives on March 24th. We’re looking for volunteers to spread the word about the harm caused by the 14. It’ll help grow our grassroots effort to take back Congress. Can you join us?
We anticipate multiple marches scheduled across the state.
H.J.Res.40, signed into law by President Trump in 2017, passed the House without a single Congressional Republican in California saying no. That bill stopped a commonsense Obama-era safety measure that expanded the pool of people who need to undergo a background check to purchase a firearm.
While 97% of Americans support universal background checks, the Republicans we send to Washington actually voted to reduce the number of background checks! They are dangerously out of touch.
I’m sick of the NRA putting our lives at risk, and I’m tired of the Members of Congress on their payroll. Here’s how much money the 14 received from the NRA by the end of 2017:
- Ken Calvert: $147,166
- Ed Royce: $109,120
- Tom McClintock: $95,156
- Kevin McCarthy: $86,850
- Jeff Denham: $62,900
- Darrell Issa: $54,270
- David Valadao: $49,200
- Dana Rohrabacher: $42,150
- Duncan Hunter: $41,087
- Devin Nunes: $37,450
- Mimi Walters: $19,650
- Paul Cook: $16,100
- Steve Knight: $15,054
- Doug LaMalfa: $13,500
They’ve spent their entire careers doing the bidding of the NRA and undermining public safety. Enough is enough.
Flip the 14 and the Sacramento Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO Announce Partnership in CA-04 to Defeat Congressman Tom McClintock
ROSEVILLE, CA – Flip the 14, a statewide organization focused on defeating all 14 Republican Members of Congress in California, and the Sacramento Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO which consists of over 100 labor unions in Northern California, today announced a partnership and field strategy to defeat Republican Congressman Tom McClintock in California’s 4th Congressional District. Earlier this month, the Cook Political Report added CA-04 to their list of swingable districts.
“Working people have had enough of Tom McClintock. Vote after vote, he sabotages our ability to support our families and improve life in our community. He’s voted against basic worker protections and health care for us all. It’s time for a change,” said Fabrizio Sasso, executive director of the Sacramento Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO.
He added, “The Sacramento Labor Council believes the conditions are ripe to win in CA-04, and we’re excited to partner with Flip the 14 to immediately launch a metric-driven field campaign the likes of which this district has never seen before.”
“It wasn’t that long ago that Charlie Brown narrowly lost to Tom McClintock in this district by only 1,800 votes. This year, strong women candidates are running to defeat McClintock, and two of them outraised him in the most recent filing period,” explained Doug Linney, Flip the 14’s cofounder and campaign manager. “Working with the Sacramento Labor Council, Flip the 14 is going to do everything it takes to help McClintock’s eventual challenger be victorious in November.”
